‘La Grande Bellezza’ (The Great Beauty), Paolo Sorrentino (2013)

This is how it always ends. With death. But first there was life, hidden beneath the blah, blah, blah… It’s all settled beneath the chitter chatter and the noise, silence and sentiment, emotion and fear. The haggard, inconstant flashes of beauty. And then the wretched squalor and miserable humanity. All buried under the cover of the embarrassment of being in the world, blah, blah, blah… Beyond there is what lies beyond. And I don’t deal with what lies beyond. Therefore… let this novel begin. After all… it’s just a trick. Yes, it’s just a trick.

Stop motion animation in the style of King Kong (1933) was rejected because of the time it would take and the subsequent cost. Also, according to special effects director, Eiji Tsuburaya, there was simply no one in Japan who was skilled and experienced in doing that kind of stop motion animation.

I love the end credits of Death Proof. Because by the time the film is over, it’s clear that this simple, cathartic little story is about something more than car chases and revenge. It’s about the ugly reality of misogyny, and it’s about female power fighting back. It being a Tarantino film, the message is all wrapped up in his signature style. But the imagery of the end credits is where it’s at. It’s just a montage of female faces, from women to little girls. Most of them aren’t even characters in the film.  It’s just a celebration of women in general. The message: Sexism sucks. Women are awesome. Don’t fuck with them.

"They had a choice, all of them. They could have followed in the footsteps of good men like my father, or President Truman. Decent men who believed in a day’s work for a day’s pay. Instead they followed the droppings of lechers and communists and didn’t realize that the trail led over a precipice until it was too late. Don’t tell me they didn’t have a choice. Now the whole world stands on the brink, staring down into bloody Hell all those liberals and intellectuals and smooth-talkers…and all of a sudden nobody can think of anything to say.”
